The (Holiday) Package: CGL’s Final 2014 Fundraiser!

The American Cancer Society recognized CGL as a community partner!

Hello LOST friends, and happy holidays!

As of today, we have raised a grand total of $78,586.57 for the American Cancer Society this year via 2 very successful charity auctions, online donations from kind fans/friends and percentages of proceeds from both LOST: The Musical and LOST 2014! Thank you all SO much for your heartwarming generosity – we are forever appreciative for your support.

We were thrilled and honored that the ACS kindly acknowledged Cancer Gets LOST at their Bay Area gala a few weeks ago; CGL is recognized as a community partner because of the amount we have raised for the ACS in 2014!

GIVING TUESDAY

In the spirit of #GivingTuesday, and as 2014 comes to an end – we are offering up a few fun incentives to make last-minute donations to the ACS. Why not make a tax-deductible contribution AND treat yourself or another LOST fan in your life with a small piece of memorabilia? We are hoping to up our grand total of ACS donations to an even $80,000 if possible (or, in honor of LOST: $81,500)!

DONATION INCENTIVES

2) If you make a donation to the ACS in the amount of $25 or more, we will ship you a Squirrel Baby on Board window sign, CGL poster and CGL wristband.

Author and LOST star Evangeline Lilly recently signed a copy of her book The Squickerwonkers specifically for CGL!

3) If you make a donation to the ACS in the amount of $50 or more, will will ship you a Squirrel Baby on Board window sign, CGL poster, CGL wristband – AND you will be automatically entered to win an autographed copy of Evangeline Lilly’s book The Squickerwonkers or a LOST Season 6 DVD signed by Damon Lindelof! Numbers: 2014 CGL to ACS Donation Estimates!

While we would love to be able to share an exact grand total of money raised by Cancer Gets LOST for the American Cancer Society from our 2014 auctions, we will not have the final amount until all invoices from our online charity auction are paid in full to Blacksparrow Auctions. Hint, hint!

LOST sheet music custom framed, signed & donated by Michael Giacchino for the CGL charity auction; it sold for $650, which goes to the ACS!

In the meantime, the estimated numbers we can share are mind blowing, humbling, exhilarating and heartwarming. Our math was a bit high on both the initial online auction estimate and silent auction donation amount from LOST 2014 in Hawaii, but we aren’t complaining at all – these numbers are incredible!

Silent charity auction at LOST 2014: $10,372.19
Online charity auction (100% of CGL items + consignment percentages): $64,355.38
Squirrel Baby signs (commissioned/donated by Bonnie Craft): $315
Online donations to the ACS via CGL (that we know about!): $1,350

$76,392.57!

We want to thank every single one of you who bid on or won any items in our silent and online auctions – we are incredibly thankful for your amazing support! In addition – we are SO grateful for all of your fantastic contributions, from items in the auctions to financial donations to the American Cancer Society.

SILENT AUCTION

In Hawaii at LOST 2014 last week during the LOST 10 year anniversary party on September 22, we were so surprised and thrilled to raise over $10,000 for the ACS at our silent charity auction! We reached that amount because many attendees kindly made additional contributions to their donation amounts after winning their items. It was a stellar success and we are stunned by and appreciative of that level of generosity.

BONNIE

As many of you are aware, our dear friend Bonnie Craft passed away last week. A few months ago she had custom LOST Squirrel Baby on Board car signs made for CGL, which we offered at LOST 2014 for $5 text donations to the ACS. With the remaining signs, we will be sending one to anyone who makes a donation to the ACS in Bonnie’s memory. The details are in our previous post.

BLACKSPARROW AUCTIONS

A special note of gratitude to our auction host Blacksparrow Auctions. Erica and Fong are great friends and partners; their extremely long hours, dedication to the cause and overall organization made this auction possible. To give you an idea about what kind of people they are, Blacksparrow paid for the auction items that Bonnie had bid on and won before she passed away – and they are shipping the items to her family. It is a gesture that we are in awe of and appreciate to no end.

NAMASTE!

We are unable to express precisely how much these fundraising endeavors mean to us, but please know that we are honored to be able to raise funds for an organization like the ACS. For our families, for the Jensen family and for all of your families.

There are so many kind people to thank for countless favors, donations, autographs, etc. that we created an entire tab on our site dedicated to them, along with their Twitter handles or websites – we encourage you to follow/support these lovely human beings!

FUTURE FUNDRAISING

  • If you’re in the Los Angeles area, we highly recommend that you get tickets to see LOST The Musical! The play runs now through October 26, and they are graciously donating 5% of their ticket proceeds to CGL!
  • And…LOST 2014 will also be donating 5% of ticket sales to CGL soon! Namaste, Kelley!

Thank you all everybody, for every cent you donated to the ACS and for your support of this 2-person grassroots charity that we are proud to call Cancer Gets LOST.

Namaste,

Jo & Jared

In Loving Memory of Bonnie Craft (March 12, 1959 – September 25, 2014)

Bonnie with CGL co-founder Jared at The Barracks, SDCC 2011

Five days ago, we delivered the sad news about the sudden passing of Bonnie Craft, our great friend, a huge CGL supporter, and probably one of the biggest LOST fans to have ever graced this planet. The outpouring of condolences from everyone who knew her has been overwhelming, especially to her family. Many people have asked how they can contribute to Bonnie’s funeral expenses, and if they could send flowers or gifts of respect and tribute.

We have spoken with her family, and they have decided to continue Bonnie’s incredible legacy by doing what she did best: taking care of other people. As such, in lieu of donations, flowers, or gifts to the family, they have requested that donations be made instead to the American Cancer Society.

If you do make a donation to the ACS in any amount, in Bonnie’s memory, please email us a copy of your receipt (cancergetslost at gmail dot com), because we’d love to send you one of her custom LOST Squirrel Baby on Board car signs (we will ship them anywhere around the world). Bonnie had commissioned a squirrel baby sketch after seeing a version of one in a magazine article featuring Damon and Carlton’s LOST writing room. She then had car signs made of this sketch specifically for CGL fundraising endeavors, and many attendees at the LOST 2014 silent charity auction last week picked one up for $5 donations each to the ACS!

If you would like to share a memory of her with her family, her good friend Caleb Woods is leading an effort to do just that. Please check out his message if you would like to contribute.

Even though she has left us, we continued to feel Bonnie’s support during our Cancer Gets LOST charity auction: the items that she donated helped us raise an astounding $3,531 for the American Cancer Society. In the weeks before she passed, she had even placed bids on the very items that she had donated herself (classic Bonnie)!

The messages of condolences and tributes from people all over the world reflected the sheer number of lives that she had touched, and the common theme among all these messages – even from people she had only met online was that Bonnie’s heart was boundless. It is thus our honor and indeed privilege to continue Bonnie’s passion for philanthropy, and we hope that you will join us in doing so.

Namaste, Bonnie. We will see you in another life, sister. – Jared & Jo

Saying Goodbye to the Best LOST Fan Ever

It is with incredible sadness that we are letting the LOST community know that Bonnie Craft passed away this morning.  As most of you are aware, Bonnie was quite possibly the world’s most dedicated LOST fan and this community was her family. Known as @andalone on Twitter, Bonnie kept an amazingly detailed site about the treasure trove of LOST items she collected over the years (http://amazingexgirlfriend.blogspot.com).  She was a major contributor and good friend to Cancer Gets LOST; Bonnie donated many items to our charity auctions and volunteered to assist us at every opportunity. Bonnie and her passionate enthusiasm will be missed, and we know that the entire LOST community shares our grief for this tremendous loss.

Bonnie was in Hawaii at the time of her passing. But we ask that you please do not inquire about the details, and respect her family’s privacy at this time.  As soon as we know more and are allowed to share, including memorial and/or donation information, we will let you know.

The Hatch Door is Now Open: Welcome to the 2014 CGL Charity Auction!

The time has finally arrived! Two years in the making, we are very proud to present the official 2014 Cancer Gets LOST charity auction hosted by Blacksparrow Auctions! HERE is the link for auction, which is open 1 day early! It will remain open online until September 27, and anyone around the world is welcome to register and bid!

Bid Together, Buy Alone

If you are interested in participating in our 2014 Cancer Gets LOST charity auction by bidding on any of the 455 items, registration is now open! There are a few simple steps to register on the auction home page, and the approval process is quick (usually same day).

Questions?

All auction instructions, bidding, payment and shipping information is located right on the home page of the auction! If you have any logistical questions about the auction or auction items consigned by Blacksparrow, please contact them via this Contact Us form or email (blacksparrowauctions@gmail.com).

If you have any questions about Cancer Gets LOST items specifically, please email Jo (jo@jopinionated.com).

Charity of Choice

As a reminder, 100% of final bids (“hammer price”) from all CGL designated items will be donated to the American Cancer Society. We selected this charity because cancer has affected our own families recently, as well as so many of yours – and the ACS is a fantastic resource for cancer research, programs and services.

The auction itself is dedicated to the memory of Amy Jensen, wife of our good friend Jeff Jensen from Entertainment Weekly. Amy passed away in June after bravely battling brain cancer for many years. We are honored to be able to raise money for an organization that offers support for families like the Jensens.

If you are interesting in supporting the cause but not bidding on anything in the auction, we encourage you to please make a donation to the ACS on their site. Of course you do not need to designate that it is for CGL; donate in honor or in memory of anyone you choose. Please email Jo your donation receipt for any contribution amount (jo at jopinionated dot com); we would love to send you either a CGL wristband or poster.  And your name will be added to our list of 2014 CGL ACS supporters.

Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and FB for daily auction item highlights and updates. Thank you in advance for your interest, support and helping to spread the word!

Namaste!

[By The] Numbers: The 2014 CGL Charity Auction hosted by Blacksparrow Auctions

In the interest of complete transparency, we wanted to explain exactly what you will be paying, why, and to whom when the 2014 Cancer Gets LOST charity auction opens on September 1 and closes on September 27.

The Whole Truth

Most of you may not be aware than for our first CGL auction in 2012, the two of us paid thousands of dollars for the shipping and insurance of 280 items to winning bidders around the world. We did so out of our own pockets and it was our choice to do so. Rookie mistake! In addition, we paid thousands of dollars in back-end fees when the auction closed, to our former auction site host. Also out of pocket. We certainly do not regret it, but to be frank – we are just two very passionate people running a grassroots charity on our own, with zero budget/funding/sponsorships. And in order to continue following our hearts and doing what we absolutely love, fundraising for cancer organizations via auctions of rare and autographed pop culture memorabilia, we are simply unable to cover shipping and auction site fees.

For these reasons, we chose to partner and work with Blacksparrow Auctions for the foreseeable future! Blacksparrow is an experienced and professional auction company that is very generously hosting the 2014 CGL auction for us. The amount of incredibly hard work that it takes to create an auction of this magnitude cannot be understated, and we would truthfully not have one at all this year without their help.

Through the Looking Glass: Winning Bids/Hammer Prices

When the auction ends on September 27, your final winning bid amount (“hammer price”) on all Cancer Gets LOST items will be donated to the American Cancer Society through Blacksparrow Auctions. In addition, on your invoice you will see a 20% Buyer’s Premium charge, plus shipping, from Blacksparrow. Please keep in mind that almost every traditional auction operates this way.

EXAMPLE: If you bid on & win a signed poster for $100, the hammer price will be $100.
On your invoice
$100 to be donated to the American Cancer Society via Blacksparrow Auctions
$20 is your Buyer’s Premium for Blacksparrow Auctions
Shipping cost to be determined, depending on size and weight of item
There will be a 9% sales tax for CA residents only

Follow the Leader

Please refer to Blacksparrow Auctions’ specific Terms and Conditions on their site, and email them (blacksparrowauctions@gmail.com) with ALL logistical questions about the auction, Buyer’s Premiums, shipping, etc.!

Thank you in advance for your patience, interest and support! We will be posting the charity auction link here and on social media as soon as it is live on Monday, September 1!

2014 Charity Auction Details!

In just two weeks, our huge online charity auction opens! Beginning September 1 and ending on September 27, the official 2014 Cancer Gets LOST charity auction will be open to fans and collectors around the globe.

Jared models an authentic Dharma jacket, donated by Sterling Beaumon, that will be available in our charity auction!

Hosted By An[other]

The CGL charity auction is hosted by our partner Blacksparrow Auctions, and we will be posting Further Instructions about their bidding, payment and shipping processes next week. A digital catalog of items in the auction will be available on September 1; we will link to that here and on Twitter/FB.

Charity of Choice

100% of the proceeds from all CGL items in the auction will be donated directly to the American Cancer Society! In addition, a percentage of the proceeds from a few items in the auction that are consigned through Blacksparrow Auctions (entirely separate from CGL) will also be donated to the ACS! Auction items will be very clearly designated as CGL or Blacksparrow.

If you prefer to support CGL by making a financial contribution to the ACS rather than bid on items in our charity auction, here are simple instructions to do so. We already have a generous friend who has offered to match the first $500 donated to the ACS via CGL!

Our Hearts and Minds

We selected the ACS as our charity of choice this year because Jo’s mother-in-law has pancreatic cancer. The auction itself is dedicated to the memory of Amy Jensen, wife of our good friend Jeff Jensen from Entertainment Weekly. Amy passed away in June after bravely battling brain cancer for many years. We are honored to be able to raise money for an organization that offers support to all families facing cancer with and on behalf of their loved ones.

The Items Behind the Curtain

On September 1, we’re so excited to be able to share with you the incredible items that have been donated and that we’ve been collecting for this charity auction over the last two years! Here is a list of the films and television shows with signed or rare memorabilia featured in our auction.

We would not be able to put this auction together without the incredible support of the many who have kindly taken the time to either sign or donate items. Your contributions are so very appreciated.

Our friend Daniel Roebuck stopped by the Blacksparrow Auctions warehouse recently to sign a Dr. Arzt bobblehead for the auction, and we also attempted to make this silly promo video!

Stay tuned for more auction details and frequent updates!

Namaste,

Jared and Jo

The Long (San Diego Comic) Con!

Last weekend we attended San Diego Comic-Con once again, with the primary focus of networking for the charity and getting on the radar of folks who may want to contribute videos or auction items in the future! We are happy to report that with the help of many CGL friends, many pieces of memorabilia that will be featured in our upcoming charity auction were acquired during this trip! As a reminder, our online charity auction (hosted by Blacksparrow Auctions), opens on September 1, 2014 and runs through September 27. The auction is open to anyone around the globe, and proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society!

Sam Underwood, currently starring as Luke/Mark on The Following and formerly Zach Hamilton on Dexter, kindly signed this Dexter: The Final Season DVD for our auction!

Dexter: The Final Season DVD

In addition, Sam also arranged to get the SDCC 2014 name placards signed by his co-stars and show runners from The Following for us!

The Following cast & show runner SDCC placards

Just as she did at SDCC 2013, the very sweet and generous Evangeline Lilly (Kate on LOST, Tauriel in The Hobbit, soon to be Hope in Ant-Man) signed a copy of her book The Squickerwonkers for our charity auction! We will have signed copies of both last year’s soft cover version and this year’s hard cover updated version of her book in the auction.

Jo with Evangeline Lilly at NerdHQ, SDCC 2014

In other LOST-alum related news, Jo was also lucky enough to run into Harold Perrineau – who was at SDCC promoting his new show Constantine. Although he was literally running from one event to the next, he took the time to sign a Michael & Walt costume card for the auction!

Jo with Harold Perrineau at SDCC 2014

We are so grateful to those behind and in front of the camera in the film/TV industry that continue to support our cause; their contributions significantly elevate our auction offerings and fundraising opportunities.

Stay tuned for many more auction updates and instructions this month!

Namaste,

- Jo & Jared

There’s No Place Like Home: The Paley Center for Media!

Shannon and Boone costumes from LOST, on exhibit at The Paley Center for Media

As we previously announced, there is a new LOST exhibit at The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, CA. It features screen-used LOST props and costumes that will be up for bid in our next charity auction in September – hosted by Blacksparrow Auctions! 100% of the proceeds from all auction items sold on behalf of Cancer Gets LOST will be donated directly to the American Cancer Society, and a portion of all proceeds from consigned items acquired by Blacksparrow Auctions will also be donated to the ACS!

The Paley Center is generously hosting an official reception on Thursday, April 24 called Get LOST at The Paley – we will both be there, along with the press and a few special guests! The event is open to the public, but you must RSVP to the email address on the invite below.

The exhibit will be on display for the next several months, so we hope that many of you have the chance to visit and let us know about your experience! We are so grateful for this opportunity, and would like to thank both Blacksparrow Auctions and The Paley Center for Media for allowing us to be a part of this amazing exhibit. Their support, in addition to the incredible ongoing support of the LOST community, continues to be equally humbling and motivating. Our #1 goal and priority is to raise awareness and money for cancer charities, and because of YOU we are able to do so!

In addition, we have made a few familiar LOST friends during our ongoing charity auction outreach, and recently Nestor Carbonell kindly recorded this video to help us promote the cause!

Namaste, Nestor! And we hope to see many of you next week!
